Know your system before you call

Lake region homes use a wide mix of heating and cooling systems. Knowing yours helps the contractor come prepared.

Ductless mini-split heat pumps

The most popular upgrade for lake region homes. Provide both heating and cooling from one unit. Modern units run efficiently down to -14°F — ideal for seasonal camps and lakefront homes.

Central furnace systems

Oil, propane, or gas furnaces connected to duct systems. Common in year-round homes throughout the lake region. Most heating contractors service all fuel types.

Boiler systems

Hot water heating common in older New England homes. Oil or gas-fired. Very reliable but require annual service. Radiant heat through baseboard or in-floor systems.

Central air conditioning

Ducted AC systems for whole-home cooling. Less common in older lake region homes, but increasingly requested. Often combined with existing duct systems from forced-air furnaces.

Maine offers rebates for heat pump installations through Efficiency Maine. Ask your contractor about current incentive programs — rebates can significantly offset installation costs.

What to have ready

Having this on hand helps the contractor respond faster and arrive prepared.

For heating and cooling work, verify contractor licensing with the State of Maine before hiring. If you can't reach one contractor, call the next on the list — availability during peak periods varies.
